Dear Glee Writers:

This is what needs to happen.

1. Stop talking out of your asses. If you are going to talk about going back to basics, go back to the basics. If you are going to make the show heavily relationship-focused, focus on the relationships that were forefront in your minds when the show started. This doesn’t necessarily mean putting them back together. I’m pretty sure the Puck/Quinn relationship has sailed, but he was a big part of her story and they should still interact. Writers, from the beginning, you’ve said Artie and Tina should be together. You created a divergent storyline to develop them and develop Mike, and then you abandoned it, leaving one character in limbo until Season 3, one character STILL in limbo and throwing a third character under the bus. You were gracious enough to give Kevin and Jenna another year; do justice to their characters. You changed plans for a character’s future because another character brought in more fangirls and money. If you don’t want people to be mad about broken promises, don’t make promises. And stop pairing every character with every character just because you haven’t gone there yet. Some people would just be terrible together.
    
2. If you are going to have characters sing songs and take up screen time under the guise of “this is a song I might want the Glee Club to do for [insert competition here],” address it later or don’t have those scenes at all. Blaine did not sound terrible singing “Cough Syrup,” but there was no particular reason for him to have sung that song and certainly no excuse for his facial expressions throughout. I’m not a fan of Dave Karofsky, and I’m not generally a fan of guest stars getting songs when Tina still hasn’t gotten hers, but it would have made a ton more sense for him to sing it, and they could have still had a Klaine scene where Kurt was talking to Blaine about Regionals or Sebastian or something and he kept getting texts from Dave, and the song could be intercut. The scenes in “Funeral” where the characters are “auditioning” for Jesse were a waste of time. Sure, the singers sounded great but every second sung was a second of potential plot lost, and everyone knew he’d pick Rachel anyway. And what was the point of the whole “Michael” fiasco if the Warblers did The Wanted and Lenny Kravitz instead? If you’re going to have people sing songs that are “potential Regionals material,” you should maybe, you know, use them at Regionals. Even if you don’t, have an excuse. Mercedes wanted to sing her big Dreamgirls number at S1 Sectionals, and Mr. Schue was all ready to let her, but then the other school did it.
   
   
3. Stop playing favorites. We know that there are some performers on the show who get more to do because of their sheer talent (Lea, Chris, Naya), and we’re totally OK with that. We also know that there are some performers on the show who get more to do because you just like them better for some reason. Not cool.
   
   
4. It’s irresponsible to treat two similar storylines differently. Santana was outed and, apart from that one creepy guy and her grandma, her “drama” was pretty much confined to the end of one episode and part of the next, much of her potentially moving dialogue happened offscreen and she seemed to be relatively placated by a cheesy soft-rock version of a pop anthem sung by the person who outed her. Karofsky was outed, tries to off himself and the faculty (albeit not the faculty at his old school) immediately assembles to address the situation, Will brings it up to the students, he gets the regionals numbers dedicated to him and Kurt visits him in the hospital. While perhaps Santana’s wasn’t taken as seriously because she’s generally seen as “stronger” than Karofsky and thus not as “in need” of an intervention, there’s often no way of knowing who’s really “strong”/”weak” until it’s too late.
   
   
5. “Cutesy” meta-jokes about your blatant misrepresentation of a character do not excuse you from doing so. It’s bullshit and not funny that Tina hasn’t had a solo or storyline that isn’t related to being Mike-velcro since S1.
   
   
6. The original six should have solos or duets at Nationals. Finn and Rachel because what’s a competition episode without Finn and Rachel? Artie and Tina because they’re going to be the longest-running members of Glee Club and they’ve never quit. Kurt and Mercedes because they sounded flawless together in “4 Minutes” and because Kurt deserves to have a competition duet that isn’t “Candles.”
